Under the Defence of the Realm Acts, the Education Department was required to keep constantly posted up in some conspicuous place on their premises the name and other information of every man between the ages of 18 and 41 in the employ of the Education Committee. They therefore wrote to all schools asking for a list of every male member of staff together with their date of birth. Those between the ages of 18 and 41 were also requested to declare:
" present address
" Whether registered under the National Registration Act at that address?
" date of engagement
" whether married or widower with a dependent child, or single or widower without a dependent child
" if in possession of any document entitling him to exemption from military service, to state nature of document
" if attested
