A note in the front of the volume details the provenance of the volume, its contents and the work of the Rev. J Malet Lambert M.A., LL.D. who was keen to improve sanitation in Hull and the surrounding district. The volume was presented by Archdeacon Lambert to the Hull Public Libraries Committee. The letters and press cuttings which interleaved the pages of the volume have been removed and can be found at L SP/51/2 and L SP/51/3.
