Special Collection items in Hull Local Studies Library: Obsolete and curious words by W.A. Gunnell, with addtions by Joseph Temple
- Reference No:
- L SP/88
- Dates:
- c.1895
- Description:
Includes a note stating that this volume became seperated from the Johnson Manuscripts, see reference L DSJT. The glossary is written on the backs of advertisement bills for patent medicines, stated to be obtainable from the shop of W.A. Gunnell. The obsolete and curious words together with their modern meanings are listed in alphabetical sequence. The note also states that it seems probable that this volume is the glossary which J.R. Boyle conjectured must have been compiled by the author of the Johnson manuscripts in order to produce the consistancy of spelling and usage, which would indeed be a curious feature in a genuine writing of the period.
