Refers to the following: Markham being a firm advocate of 'horizontal movement' and usually having a suit case in both hands; father living in Canada from the age of Markham being 4, but the family staying in the Caribbean for another 10 years until his mother moved them to England; building houses in France; staging plays in the Caribbean islands; teaching in Germany and Sweden; now being writer in residence at University of Ulster; beginning career with drama, using dialogue in nation-language; consciously evolved a lively performance style at poetry readings to 'lift the poem from the page'; publication of books of poetry under pen name 'Paul St Vincent' who is 'young, black, and concerned with survival in inner-city London', and motive behind this being to allow him to explore racism and alienation which he did not feel as E. A. Markham; whilst teaching in Cologne for a year he joined feminist writing group feeling that patriarchy was cause of worst evils in society - this leading to Sally Goodman, a white woman, allowing him to denounce patriarchy; dropping of alias Paul St Vincent when he became sought after for appearances and readings; dropping of Goodman after female friend agreed to send her photograph to an American magazine but Markham subsequently receiving 'lecherous' letters from middle-aged editors; enjoyment of 'high level of creative energy' at Ulster; creation of Writing Ulster; 'What's the point in making art unless there's the structure to uphold it? I'm fascinated by the whole cycle of art, which involves the completion of the process'.
