The flooding of the river Ayer sometimes preventing the burial of the dead from Carlton at their parish church of Snayth, licence is granted for burials at Carlton. ('...but as the same petition added there shall be canonically built (in Carlton) a chapel in honour and under the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary, near which there is likewise a cemetery'): Bulla
