Montreal, in command of 81st regiment at St John's. Description of: elections in Montreal; walking match with brother officer, Murray, from St John's to La Prairie and back in 12 hours; Murray nearly died but Charles completed the course, and commented unfavourably on stamina of the modern soldier; news of sale of his old home, Tixall; visits to Lachine, Bytown, Falls of Chandiere, and passage through lakes of Toronto; visit to Buffalo to see Macready play in 'Werther'; meeting with Macready the next day.
