Watt v Creyke, later Hall v Creyke

Description:

This large series contains documents relating to the High Court case of Watt v Creyke, later Hall v Creyke. This arose out of a feature of Richard Watt's (d.1855) will: for two generations his property was shared between his sons and grandsons as life interests, but then reverted to the children of the eldest son of his eldest daughter. As the heir to whom the estate reverted was a minor child at the time, the estate was held in trust and administered via the Chancery Division of the High Court.

No original order was discernible among the papers when they were deposited, so for ease of locating items they have been divided into subseries: Early records, relating to the life of Richard Watt the elder (d. 1807); records relating to the Hall v Creyke/Watt v Creyke High Court case; deeds, rentals, admissions and surrenders; and accounts and financial records.

Within series documents are mostly arranged chronologically.

Where multiple copies of documents were deposited only one has been retained.
