Description:
William Watt, by his Will dated 10 October 1874, left £3,000 to the Race Co. to be invested and the annual proceeds to be spent on a prize (the Watt Memorial Plate) to the winner of the Bishop Burton Stakes. If no race meeting was held at Beverley for two consecutive years, the money was to pass to the Charity. Racing having been suspended during war-time, and the Royal Air Force having occupied the Beverley course, no racing took place there 1915 - 1918. The Charity Commissioners ordered the trustees to take proceedings for the money. The summons was dismissed
