Copy letter from Capt. Hotham, Cawood, to Newcastle

Reference No:
U DDHO/1/18
Dates:
9 Jan 1643
Description:
Hopes for a good peace, but desires to see neither side the absolute conqueror 'it is too great a temptation to courses of will and violence.' Without a peace soon, the necessitous people of the country will rise, and end by setting up for themselves to the ruin of the nobility and gentry. There are great numbers of such in the west, and if this unruly rout once casts the rider the example will run like wildfire through England.
