- Communication with Philadelphia had been much affected by ice recently; had held a ball to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. General Prescott had recently arrived; frequently sees his (CH’s) friends Colonel Innes and Dr Roberts; a ship had arrived from Liverpool reporting that 'neither the news of Philadelphia, or the Disaster of Genl Burgoynes Army was known by authority in England', likewise the successes in Hudsons River (ship carrying the news thought to have sunk)
