Letters to Mrs. Scarlett from Wm. Green of Good Hope: Peru and Green Vale Estates

Reference No:
U DDLA/41/18
Dates:
1800-1812
Description:

Letters from William Green of Good Hope, relating to Peru and Green Vale; monies owed to Eliza Virgo Scarlett for hire of enslaved people; financial matters.

There are few details of the people on the estates within these letters, but one does give an idea of the enslaved people at Peru:

Letter dated 20 June 1806: "Inclosed you have a list of your Negroes on Peru Estate, together with their age, occupation, and Condition, they have been either hard work'd, or very materially neglected, however I shall have an eye to them in future, Richard will not give more than £600 per Ann. for them, I can assure you from their valuation." [The list is not with the letter, but it seems likely that this relates to the list from 1806 in U DDLA/41/26.]
