Description:

The movements of Eliza Virgo Scarlett can be traced through these letters. Those from 1799 are addressed to her at Greenfield Estate, Trelawny, Jamaica; subsequently, most are addressed to her in London, but those sent in 1815 and February 1817 are again addressed to her at Greenfield. By November 1817 she had returned to England and was living in Cheltenham.

(1) From Robert Scarlett, 20 Jan 1798. Addressed to "my dear niece". Relating to estate administration.

(2) From Thomas Munro, Montego Bay, 2 July 1799. Expressing "great disappointment at receiving no payment on account of my negroes for two years by past" and requesting payment.

(3) From Dr Edgar, 16 Oct 1801. Enclosing letter for Dr Gardner (not present).

(4) From T. James, Trelawny, 1802. Conditions of Peru and Green Vale estates, sale of Green Vale.

(5) From H. [Davis], 1 Sep 1803. Sale of Green Vale.

(6) From [D O'Malony], Kingston, Jamaica, 28 Jan 1805. Acknowledgement of her letter of 6 Nov.

(7) From Hopewell Tyler, Trelawny, 22 May 1810. Legacy due to be paid from Greenfield by Mr Minto.

(8) From W Minto Esq. rec'd Mar 1813. Re a moiety.

(9) From Wm. Fairclough, Green park, Trelawny, Jamaica, 3 Aug 1813. Re maintenance of her daughters; Green Vale.

(10) From W. R. James, Spanish Town, Jamaica, 19 Sep 1813. Enclosing extract of order of the Court of Chancery regarding allowances received by her from Peru and Green Vale.

(11) From Pusey & James, Spanish Town, Jamaica, 5 Aug 1815. Re proceedings in Chancery against Green Vale, Peru and The Thicketts.

(12) From Pusey & James, Spanish Town, Jamaica, 23 Aug 1815. Re Mr Stevenson's position, the payment of her annuity, and their acting as her solicitors.

(13) From David Richards, Trelawny, Jamaica, 1 Nov 1817. Re debts and unpaid legacies on the estate of the late James Scarlett; her proposal to recover Green Vale for her family.

(14) Letter to Robert Hawthorn Esq. of Hawthorn & Ogilvie, London, from Richard Whiteside & Co., Whitehaven, 16 Jan 1821. Re the death of Mrs Scarlett, Greenfield estate.

(15) Letter to EVS from Richard Whiteside & Co., Whitehaven, 6 Aug 1819. Statement of account.

(16) Partial letter to [EVS]. Signature and date missing. Re dispute about charges; includes copy extract from "Gallimore v Scarlett et al".

(17) Letter to EVS from Robert Hawthorn, Spanish Town, 10 Feb 1817. Re her claims on Greenvale Estate.

(18) Letter from James Scarlett senior, Halstead, Essex, 2 Oct 1799. Re disagreement with Jack [John Scarlett]; family matters.
