- Sending copy of letter from Berwick (19 January) giving news of battle of Falkirk (began at 3.30 p.m. and lasted until 6.00 p.m. Violent storm of wind and rain in faces of our troops. Our cannon never discharged and 7 captured by rebels. Huske beat back main body of rebels and made safe retreat to Linlithgow with luggage about 7.00 p.m. Rebels kept field of battle. Ligonier's dragoons retrieved their honour. Our casualties not above 300, rebels three times that. 'Battereau's, Wolf's and the old Buffs drove them off the field' and would not have quitted it but for the bad weather. Colonels Whitney, Biggar and Stanhope killed, also Lt. West of Ligonier's. Maj. Macdonald captured and sent to Edinburgh, Huske universally extolled. Army retreated to Edinburgh, ammunition wet and spoiled. Rebels said to be not less than 12,000 and out numbered our army by some thousands)
