Reference No:
U DFW/1/6/4
Dates:
24 Oct 1899-18 Feb 1902
Description:

Volume of typed copies of letters, with one loose letter, mainly received from Clive Wilson while he was in South Africa fighting in the Boer War. Many of the letters give details of engagements with Boer soldiers, descriptions of travelling around South Africa, and descriptions of his injuries (Wilson was wounded towards the end of the war, losing a finger). Wilson volunteered for the army at the outbreak of the war, beginning as a Corporal in Pagets Horse and ending as a 1st Lieutenant.

Occasional letters to the Wilson family written by other correspondents have also been included.

The loose letter is dated 24 October 1899 and is typed and unsigned; it is addressed to "My own darling mother" and is from an injured officer. The letter describes his injury and treatment at a hospital in Ladysmith. It is not known who the author and recipient were, as Clive Wilson did not travel to South Africa until February 1900.
