Biographical Note: Clive Barnby was born in Hull in 1927, the son of John and Anna M. Barnby (nee Bostock). John Barnby was a painter and decorator, the son of John Robert Barnby of Hull, cabinet maker. Clive Barnby attended Hull College of Art and, whilst studying there in 1940/41, was evacuated to Dobella Farm, Rawcliffe, occupied by Major Wright. He was enrolled as a student at Hull School of Architecture from 1946/7, where he met the Hull architect and writer Dudley Harbron (1881-1953) who was a lecturer at the school. Barnby was influenced greatly by Harbron as an architectural historian (see 'A Life so Far...Recollections of Hull School of Architecture' edited by Jill Dickens). After qualifying as an architect, he joined the practice of Francis F. Johnson and Partners at Bridlington in 1953. He remained with the practice until 1971 when he moved to the North West of England. He subsequently moved back to Bridlington upon his retirement.
