Written over two days, letter discusses trying hurriedly to write a story so he can move onto 'The Trumpet' (a book he is thinking of writing?); and in-depth explanation of what he means by saying that D. H. Lawrence was a failure, making reference to Browning, Shelley (mentioning 'Prometheus Unbound'), and Blake. Briefly discusses jazz. (14pp). Contains illustrations of Larkin running to the pub; and Larkin and Sutton sitting under two trees, one the Tree of Knowledge and the other the Tree of Life.
