Discusses a memoir to be published to mark the occasion of his sixtieth birthday and his feelings about reaching this age. Also discusses a reception he has attended at 10 Downing Street and his admiration for Margaret Thatcher. Expresses the opinion that unemployment could be eradicated by the abolition of national assistance. Letter contains the concealed quatrain: 'I want to see them starving, The so-called working class, Their wages yearly halving, Their women stewing grass, etc'.
