Refers to Thwaite's fiftieth "saturnalia" which he (Larkin) missed, with reference to Charles Monteith, John Betjeman's 'Oxford University Chest', Harold Macmillan, the Newdigate poem being on 'Inflation', the Archbishop of Canterbury and A. D. Powell; a dispute he is having with George Hartley over a tape Larkin made for the American Foundation, and one he is having with 'Encounter' over his review of 'The Second Mrs. Hardy' by Robert Gittings and Jo Manton (review was called 'Dull Beyond Description'); Andrew Motion going to Oxford on an Arts Council grant for a year; and Larkin writing a short introduction for a Poetry Library catalogue.
