Fuel Protests 2000 (Operation Echo)

Reference No:
U DPO/8/2
Dates:
1998-2000
Description:

A number of protests and blockades took place across the United Kingdom in the year 2000 in response to the high rates of tax on fuel, with involvement by the People's Fuel Lobby (PFL). With origins in protests by lorry drivers in London in 1999, a series of further actions took place at a range of locations. By September, 3000 fuel stations were closed due to insufficient stock. Emergency powers were taken to ensure delivery of fuel to essential services. Later that month, the protests began to end. Afterwards, the Institute of Directors estimated the cost to UK businesses of the action at £1billion.

The records in this series reflect the Fuel 2000 Task Force project to respond to the protests, and include information on legal powers to respond to protests, review of police responsibilities, information on publicity and media response and high level plans.
