Typescript copies and summaries of letters from various sources. These include USPG [United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel] Archives Box I, 'McDougall Papers, Rhodes House' and 'Extracts from Bunyon's Memoir'. The original letters were written by Bishop F.T. McDougall and Harriette McDougall.
The recipients include Charles Bunyon, Revd Ernest Hawkins, Ellen Robson, Revd T.F. Stooks, Revd C.D. Brereton, Fanny Sawyer, Revd W. Wright, John Robson, Mrs Bunyon (Harriette's mother), Ellen Bunyon, Captain C.D.R. Bethune, Sir Francis Beaufort K.C.B.
The range of topics covered includes domestic, missionary, school and political affairs. They include the building and consecrating of a new church and burial ground, meeting Jane Austen's brother who was Admiral of HMS Fury, setting up a dispensary, accounts of tribal relations and attacks on villages, massacres and piracy and Bishop F.T. McDougall operating on a Malay woman's cataracts.
The letters were written from a number of locations including Singapore, Sarawak, Forncett St Mary, Norfolk, Schooner 'Julian' off Jahore, Kuching, Penang, Hong Kong, HMS Hastings and Malacca.
