Description:

Typescript copies and summaries of letters from various sources. These include USPG [United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel] Archives Book I (1850-59) and II (1860-67), 'McDougall Papers, Rhodes House', items 'Quoted in C.Bunyon', Basil Brooke Papers, Rhodes House, 'Extracts from Bunyon's Memoir', 'Life of A.C. Tait 1891' and photocopy of extract from unnamed book. Also includes one handwritten note and photocopy of grant for land to build cemetery.

The majority of the original letters were written by Bishop F.T. McDougall and Harriette McDougall with others by James Brooke Brooke, Walter Chambers and Charles J Bunyon.

The recipients include Revd W.T. Bullock, Charles Bunyon, Fanny Sawyer, Mrs Bunyon (Harriette's mother), Revd Ernest Hawkins, Ellen Robson, Eliza Bunyon, Lady Lucy Grant, Rajah James, Sophy McDougall, Ellen Bunyon, James Brooke Brooke, Sir Frederick Rogers, the Secretary for the Colonies, Bishop (A.C. Tait) of London and Mab (Harriette's daughter).

The range of topics covered include domestic, missionary, school and political affairs, including risings, pirate and robbery activities and issues relating to the Rajah. Of particular note are references to cholera and childbirth treatments, purchase and sales of various ships, journeys throughout region and to England and Bishop McDougall's response to criticism of his involvement in a pirate incident.

The letters were written from a number of locations including Labuan, Singapore, London, Sarawak, Dublin, Santubong, Malta, S.S.Baliana and Leatherhead.
