Description

Admin History:
The Public Health Act of 1848 (11 & 12 Vict. c.63) empowered the establishment of local boards of health in towns and parishes with recognised boundaries for the exercise of the powers conferred by the act. The Local Government Act of 1858 (21 & 22 Vict. c.-98) 6 empowered districts without recognised boundaries to adopt the act. Under the Public Health Act of 1875 (38 & 39 Vict. c.55) the boards of health were renamed urban sanitary authorities and provision was made for boards of guardians to act as rural sanitary authorities in those parts of their union which did not come within urban authorities. The Local Government Act of 1894 (56 & 57 Vict. c.73) renamed these authorities urban districts and rural districts and provided the latter with a council independent of the board of guardians. Urban and rural districts were abolished by the Local Government Act of 1972 (c.70).
