Description:

The Hull Gaol originally stood four stories high in Market Place, at the corner of Butchery (now part of Queen Street) and Mytongate. By 1783, however, it proved insufficient and an Act was passed (23 Geo III, c. 55) that empowered the Justices of the Peace to raise money for a new gaol. The old building was demolished in 1792 by which time the new gaol on Castle Street was ready.

The Castle Street Gaol building, with separate courts for debtors and felons, has since been widely regarded as a model of its time. It also had a small chapel and each room was provided with a copy of the scriptures. The total number of prisoners in 1802-1809 averaged 30.

The gaol building on Castle Street was replaced in 1829 by the new United Gaol and House of Correction on Kingston Street.
