Enacted under an Act of Parliament dated 5 Geo. IV, C.74, the Weights and Measures Act 1824 introduced a uniformity of weights and measures in Great Britain. This was the imperial weights system, and all Justices were required to purchase standardised measures for their counties, including those of the County of Hull
