The Colonial and United States Mortgage Company was first registered in July 1880, with offices initially at Exchange Buildings on Lowgate before moving to 67 Whitefriargate, Hull. A trade directory for 1882 listed them as money lenders. Amongst the first 6 company Directors, were J. Reckitt as Chairman and F. Reckitt. Benjamin Glasgow was the company secretary. The Colonial and United States Mortgage Company was voluntarily liquidated in 1922.
Arthur Brown was born in Hull in 1867. In 1881 he was an apprentice at Bailey & Leetham and joined the Colonial and United States Mortgage Company in 1886 before taking over as Company Secretary from Benjamin Glasgow on his retirement in 1898. Arthur remained a Trustee of the Reckitt Trusts until his death in 1943.
