Description

Admin History:

The first mention of Richard Field, grocer of 1 Trinity Square, Carr Lane in Kingston upon Hull appears in a trade directory in 1839. By 1879 a second establishment had opened, at 108 Beverley Road in Hull. In 1888 another branch had been opened, this time on Hallgate in Cottingham.

In 1892 a branch at 55 Saville Street was opened with a clearer identification of functions. The Hallgate, Market Place and Beverley Road sites were provisions stores and Saville Street was an ''Oriental Cafe and Coffee Store''. By 1897 there were branches in Leeds, Huddersfield and Bridlington Quay. The registered offices were at Dock Street. In 1901 there were grocers at 11 Market Place, 108 & 224 Beverley Road, 155 Anlaby Road, 5-6 Junction Street and 3-6 St John's Street. There were dining and refreshment rooms at 11 Market Place, 54-55 Saville Street and branches in Leeds, Huddersfield and Bridlington. A branch at 27 & 29 King Edward Street was added in 1904, which was renamed in 1913 as 'the Octagon Café'.

In 1973, the cafes and shops which remained were taken over by R. D. McLeish (Scottish Bakers) Ltd which ended 150 years of independent business.
