The company was incorporated in 1903 as a subsidiary of Horsley, Smith & Co. Ltd., to take over the premises and business of the bankrupt partnership of Hewetson and Lambert. It diversified into hardwood flooring in the 1920's and this eventually became its chief business. Shortly after the second world war it took over the spring floor business of Francis Morton
