Admin History:

J. W. Stanley (Insulations) Ltd. was a heat, cold and accoustic insulation engineers. The company worked on both marine and land based boilers, as well as other aspects of insulation work. They worked with companies such as C.D Holmes; Cook, Welton & Gemmell; Dunston’s and Humber Graving Dock. They also worked with the Admiralty during World War Two.

The Stanley family originated in Norfolk and the founder of the business, John William Stanley (1856-1928) was born in Morley St. Botolph, Norfolk. He moved to Hull sometime in the 1870s, working as a labourer. In 1877 he married Emily Penrose and by 1888 was listed as a boiler composition manufacturer. 1880 saw the birth of a son, John William Robert Stanley (1880-1931), who would eventually join his father's business, where he worked as a boiler coverer. In 1907 JWR Stanley married a widow, Katie Hick, who had three children, Percy, Doris and Enid. JWR Stanley took over the company in 1924 with Percy Hick (1897-1981) also becoming involved. They were eventually joined by George Edward (Ted) Stanley (1916-1986), son of JWR Stanley and Katie Hick. Ted Stanley and Percy Hick entered into a formal partnership in 1938 and the company became limited in 1955. Ted Stanley married Joyce Roberts. In 1940 they had a son, Ian Stanley who also join the business. With much of the company's work connected to the marine industry, the decline in ship building in the area during the 1970s hit their operations hard and in 1987 Ian Stanley, the last working director, put J.W. Stanley (Insulations) Ltd. into liquidation. A more complete history is contained in the document listed at C DBJS/5/1.
