Northern Foods originated from Pape and Co Ltd, a small condensed milk importing and wholesaling business from Hull. During World War II the company bought out dairies, plants wholesale and retail businesses in Humberside. In 1942 the company was registered as Northern Dairies and became a public company in 1956. After the war the company expanded to the production of ice cream, cheese, curd, whey and chocolate crumb. In the 1970s and 1980s the product lines expanded to include cream cakes, yogurts, desserts, sandwiches, recipe dishes, pizza, pasta, meat, fish and other fresh produce. The company changed its name to Northern Foods plc in 1972 to reflect the range of food that it sold. The company went on to acquire a number of large food production companies which continues to the present day. The corporate headquarters were located in Beverly House St Stephen's Square, Hull and moved to Leeds in 2005. The company continues to function under the title of Northern Foods plc.
