Description

Admin History:
The Hull Brewery Company was founded in 1888, although it's origins go back further, and it ran many pubs and hotels in the city. In 1972 the brewery was taken over by Northern Dairies and renamed North Country Breweries. Ronald Towned ran 2 of these pubs, initially the Old English Gentleman and later the Dart Hotel. The Old English Gentleman, on Mason Street, became a licensed premises in the 1840s, although the building itself goes back to around 1805. Built behind what would later become the Hull New Theatre, the Old English Gentleman would develop into the city's theatre pub, where many artists would visit and relax after performances. The Dart, on Hull's Longhill Estate, opened in 1959, and was one of the first pubs to be built after war time restrictions had been lifted. It was also the first pub on the estate. Townend became it's first landlord and remained there until he retired in 1974.
