Description
- Admin History:
Kingston High School has its roots as a Board of Education school opened in 1895 as Boulevard Higher Grade School on Boulevard in the Anlaby Road area of Hull. In 1904 it received secondary school status and the name was changed to Boulevard Municipal Secondary School under which it continued to exist until the 1930s. The exact date at which the school was renamed Kingston High School is unclear. Board of Education minutes continue to refer to the school as Boulevard throughout the 1930s though the school's own admission registers begin to use the name Kingston High School from 1938. From 1940 the school occupied a new building in Pickering Park as Kingston High School.
When first opened the school was a mixed secondary school with infants and juniors departments. However, in 1907 the infants and juniors departments were removed to leave a mixed higher education establishment with boys and girls departments each run by their own head master and mistress respectively. The school's first head master was Frederick William De Velling and its first girls' mistress was Miss Edith E. Clews. Other early masters and mistresses include William Carter and Mr H.W. Gilbert followed by Dr Cameron Walker and Miss Sheppard who both saw the school through the WWII period and its first change of premises.
At the outbreak of the Second World War evacuation plans were developed for the school. This involved the billeting of some pupils in designated properties in Hull and the evacuation of others to the Scalby area of Scarborough from 1939. Further schemes saw evacuations to Bingley in West Yorkshire and also Bourne in Lincolnshire. Evacuated children attended schools in the towns to which they were sent, with the school mistress being posted to Scarborough to oversee the care of pupils and the head master based in Hull to manage the evacuation and return of pupils in all three destination towns.
In 1945 the school celebrated its 50th anniversary with a service of commemoration in Holy Trinity Church and reunion evening for former pupils and staff. To mark the school's 21st anniversary as Kingston High School an organ fund appeal was held in 1960. Similar events to the 1945 celebrations were replicated in 1990 to mark the school's 50th anniversary as Kingston High School. Prominent former pupils of the school have included aviation pioneer Amy Johnson, actors Tom Courtney and John Alderton, and poet and playwright Alan Plater.
From 2001 the school was known as Pickering High School Sports College before its status was changed to that of an academy and the school moved to new pupose-built premises on Anlaby Park Road where it currently operated as Sirius Academy.
