Walter Toft was born in Hull in 1901 and in 1924 married Mabel Cox. They lived at various addresses in the city at:- Stenhope Avenue, 19 Summergangs Road, 66 Kelvin Street and 46 Westminster Avenue. They had a son, Denver Kevin Toft, who went on to have a daughter, Jeannene. Walter ran a shop, the Tranby, at 32 Hull Road, Anlaby with his brother, George Toft. This was an Airfix stockist and news agency, and also sold sweets, stationary and other toys. Walter was very active within the East Park Baptist Church. He had a sister, Maud Toft. Walter died in 1969.

The R38-ZR2 Airship was lost in the Humber in 1921, with the loss of 44 lives, and just 5 surviviors. It broke up with a huge explosion that caused damaged across Hull. A memorial was erected at Hull's Western Cemetery.
