Description
- Admin History:
Construction on Hull's Tidal Barrier started in January 1977. The need for a tidal barrier arose after severe flooding of the city from a tidal surge in 1969. The engineers were Mcdonald & Partners with Shankland Cox Partnership as architects. The two towers are rooted 20 metres below the water level. The gap between the towers is 30 metres, whilst the barrier is sits 26 metres high to allow for shipping to pass under. The final cost for its construction was £4.3 million.
It is the UK's second largest tidal barrier, only the barrier on the Thames is larger. In 2010 the barrier was refurbished at a cost of £10 million.
