The author of the main part of this collection, Florence Winifred Newton also known as Win lived on Park Avenue with her father, Charles Butterworth Newton, sister Elsie Frances Newton and pet dog. Also in the household was Alice Parker, the housemaid. Win was a single lady who, at the outbreak of the Second World War, aged 50 began writing a diary which she titled ‘The Banshee’ after the noise of the air raid sirens. She wrote almost every day, covering daily life, the bombings in Hull, progress of the war and various social matters.

The collection consists of a diary, covering 1939-1945, including note son the Zeppelin Raids during the First World War, an extract from a newspaper and photographs of members of the household.
