Douglas Atkinson was born in the Gipsyville area of Hull in 1936. Educated at Kingston High School, he went on to attend the University of Hull. After gaining a degree in Geography, Douglas went on to teach the subject for most of his career at Kelvin Hall School in Hull before retiring in 1988.

After retirement Douglas then became a part-time museum keeper at the Yorkshire Water Museum at the former Springhead Pumping Station and a volunteer at Hedon Museum, Burton Constable Hall and Skidby Mill. He combined his interests in Geography and History when he completed his MA in Local History Studies at Leeds University with the submission of his dissertation on the historical supply of water in Hull. He died in 2018.
