Mr George Hubert Curtis was born on 6 November 1897 and died on 16 February 1994. He was the eldest son of George and Alice Curtis of 5 Poplar Grove, Hull. His father was born in 1871 and was a corn porter and sworn weigher at Hull Docks. His father before him, Benjamin Curtis (born 1848) of 10 Clarence Terrace was also a corn porter.

Trained as a shipwright and boat builder, George Hubert worked on the small whaling boats which featured in a version of the film, 'Moby Dick'

He lived in Henly Drive, Southcoates Lane for much of his married life only moving to Southampton at the age of 87 to be close to his son's family.
