Alan Binns would lecture on subjects such as medieval English and Anglo-Saxon Studies at the University of Hull and acted as an advisor on the 1958 film, The Vikings. In 1959, he worked as an interpreter on the destroyer, H.M.S. Trafalgar, during the 1958-1961 Icelandic fisheries dispute, known as the 1st Cod War.
