Admin History:
The Alexandra Theatre opened in 1902 on the corner of George Street and Charlotte Street but was destroyed by heavy bombing in 1941. The Grand Theatre and Opera House also on George Street, was built in 1893 but converted into a cinema in 1930. Originally the Central Secondary School on Brunswick Avenue, it becomes a girls school in 1907 and relocated to Cottingham Road in 1920 when it was renamed the Newland High School for Girls. A new St. Cuthbert's Church opened in 1956 to replace the one also destroyed during WWII
