The Humberside Theatre Company had been orginally founded as the Hull Arts Centre in 1969. It was based in the former St Stephens Church Hall on Spring Street. It later changed its name again, to the Spring Street Theatre. Although born in Jarrow, Alan Plater (1935-2020), a successful scripwriter and playwright, lived in Hull for many years. Teddy Kiendl, who was born in the United States and came to Britain in his mid-20s, is another successful writer and director.
