The R38/ZR-2 airship was built in Cardington near Bedford. When it first flew in June 1921 it was at the time the world's largest airship. Problems during test flights resulted in its return to Howden for repairs. It was during a low altitude flight over Hull on 24 August 1921 that it collapsed and blew up over the River Humber. Of the 49 crew, only five survived.
