Description

Admin History:
The former General Post Office building (Grade II listed) stands on the corner of Lowgate and Alfred Gelder Street. Built 1908-9 on the site of the former Suffolk Palace, the de la Poles' medieval manor house, it is three stories high and built of Portland Stone. It was opened in July 1909 by the Postmaster-General, Sydney Buxton. It closed as a sorting office by the mid-1990s. Its downstairs is now occupied by pubs and bars, perhaps the most well-known being The Three John Scotts, whilst its upper floors are now flats and luxury apartments. The Malmo Road sorting office, Sutton Fields Industrial Estate opened in the first half of 1992 and continues as a Royal Mail sorting office.
