- Peter Warren joined the S.S. Ashlea, owned by Morrison's of Newcastle upon Tyne as a cadet officer in 1938. In Octber 1939 the Ashlea was sunk by the German battle ship, Graf Spee. Ashlea's crew were eventually transferred to the Altmark, a German tanker which acted as a prisoner of war ship. Warren, and the others on board the Altmark, would be later be rescued in Norway by H.M.S. Cossack.
