Private Jewitt was injured during an 'over the top' charge when he was tangled in barbed wire and a shell exploded in front of him showering him in shrapnel. He was found to have 13 wounds, the worst his left arm where his elbow joint had been shattered. Despite Doctors advice to have the arm amputated he preferred to keep the arm although it caused him problems for the rest of his life and bits of shrapnel embedded in his arm would surface periodically and have to be surgically removed. He finally succumbed to a heart attack brought about by blood poisoning from the remaining shrapnel at the age of 58.
