Walter Parkinson was born in Hull and by the age of 17 was working as a rivet heater for the LNER Dock Yard. He joined the Navy in April 1940 not long after the war broke out. He served on a number of ships in the Mediterranean, off the coasts of Crete, Africa and Italy and was rescued a few times from sinking ships. After the war he returned to Hull and began working for Hull Docks and later the British Transport Docks Board. Working as a repair diver, he maintained and fixed various dock installations and carried out survey work.

Also in the collection are papers relating to his home and the Compulsory Purchase Orders for properties off Queens Road, where he lived by Hull City Council.
