Description:
Letter from Lee F. Kauffman as Honorary Secretary of Hull Western Synagogue to Mr D.G. Passman as President of Hull Jewish Representative Council, received by Mrs Avril A. Rowland as Honorary Secretary of Hull Jewish Representative Council, informing him that 'the opinion of [Synagogue] council was not favourable to the recommendation that joint services be instituted on the basis described in your letter of 21 Jul 1986', for the following reasons 'The membership of the Hull Western Synagogue represent by far the majority of orthodox Jewish families in the city. The provide the bulk leadership for every Jewish Communal Organisation in the city (e.g. Chevra Kadish, Talmud Torah, Board of Shechita, Supervision of Kashrus, Board of Guardians, Flatlets etc.,) They provide a full and enjoyable Shabbat morning service which is supported regularly by around 100 congregants. It must also be pointed out that our membership includes the majority of young married couples in the community, towards whom we all will look for our future leadership. The location of the Hull Western Synagogue is such that it is much nearer for those members of the Hull Jewish Community who are Shomeri Shabbat to walk to and from Shule on Shabbat', but maintains that they feel very strongly that there should be a United Hebrew Congregation in Hull, and appealing to Hull Old Hebrew Congregation to go back to their original proposals, typescript.
