Monday July 26th Festival of Av - editorial informative account of this festival from ancient times; reminder that it is a Jew's solemn duty to study the Torah or some aspect of Jewish literatrue and that from 15th of Av say our Sages; also adds begin with the day's portion of the Sidra of the week.

Literary and Cultural Society formed: over 50 attended meeting at the Jewish Institute to discuss the formation of this society. Unanimously resolved; ad hoc committee appointed to formulate constitution and tentative syllabus for autumn and winter - to be submitted to members. Committee members: Misses Jean Robinson, M. Segal and M. Segalman, Mrs. Coupland and Messrs. L. Barnett, J.J. Nicholls, J.H. Robinson, S.R. Sheffrin and M. Wolff; agreed Society should ultimately organise Drama and Music sections.

The scourge of Tuberculosis: last Sabbath Oneg Mr. S.R. Sheffrin gave an account of T.B. (causes, prevention, cure) particularly as it affected the State of Israel (alarming increase with influx of immigrants from primitive countries); lack of expensive up-to-date equipment; Rabbi asked the 70 or more guests if they would consider becoming annual subscribers to the local branch of the Anti-T.B/ League for Israel (Mr. Sheffrin Hon. Treasurer); hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Lipman; enjoyable evening entertainment including items from Mr. Walter Abrahams ( Yiddish jokes and songs); Rev. H. Abrahams, Dr. S Lurie and Messrs. M. Hart, J.J. Nicholls, Jack and Gus Finestein made their expected contributions; Oneg had commenced with Mincha, recited by the Rabbi's eldest son Jack. Tomorrow: Rev. J. Levinson due back from visit to America and to be guest speaker. Hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lang. Mincha at 7:15 pm; not last Oneg as stated last week - will be next week when the Rabbi will be the guest speaker summing up the series; host Mr. Myer Wolff.

Congratulations: Miss Pat Albeck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Albeck, Beverley Road, Anlaby, obtained first-class honours diploma in printed textile design, silver medal and travel scholarship; Mr. Clifford Barnett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Barnett, Willerby awarded M.B. degree by the Liverpool University for a thesis on the planning and architectural development of Hull since 1800.
