William Foot Walker (1904-1995) was a very active local historian and wrote a number of books on a wide range of historical subjects. He attended Hull Grammar School and on leaving he initially worked for a Dutch grain merchants before joining the family wholesale egg and butter import business in Hull. Walker became interested in history after sightseeing with relatives on a visit to London. His first lecturing opportunity came at 16 when he took a group after a lecturer failed to show up. He would go on to teach for the Workers Educational Association until his eyesight began to fail him in his 80s. During World War Two, he taught for a while in the adult education department at the University of Hull. He was also very active within organisations such as the Hull Literary Society, where he was president, the East Riding Antiquarian Society as secretary and was a life member of the East Yorkshire Georgian Society. Married in 1941, he had three daughters
