The file consists of of correspondence, sent (and received) by the Engineer to the Humber Conservancy Board (Arthur Ernest Butterfield), to/from Commander W. S. Atkin RNR, Marine Superintendent of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company at Goole. The subjects covered includes: the delivery of charts of sections of the Upper River Humber between Hull and Goole, the position of lightships and gas floats, the grounding of vessels (s.s. 'Unity', 'Equity', 'Humber', etc.), damage done to the keel plates of the s.s. 'Unity' as a result of grounding in the Humber, the design of the light floats in the Upper Humber, the crewing and operation of pilot launches, and correspondence regarding Mr Barley (Superintendent of the Upper Humber) discussing his methods of working.
