The file consists of correspondence between the Engineer to the Humber Conservancy Board (Arthur Ernest Butterfield), the Master of the Middle Whitton Lightship, and the Assistant to the Superintendent of the Upper Humber (Charles Augustus Mountifield). The subject matter is the operation and maintenance of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Whitton Lightships. This includes crew matters, and the supply of equipment and spare parts. More specifically this includes instances of the lightships drifting off station, issues with their lanterns, and issues affecting their crew.
