Memoranda by Skipper.

Sir, on Thursday November 3rd the 2nd hand and third hand were quarrelling in the cabin, the 3rd hand drew his knife and threatened to stab himif he hit him, the 2nd hand then struck him. I told them that they had better stop it. On Friday morning we were getting our gear up, when they started quarrelling again. The 2nd again struck the 3rd hand , then the 3rd hand said he would work no more. For the assault referred to, as committed on the 3rd November by Thomas Penman on the 3rd hand W H Scarfe. Penman has been fined 10 shillings under regulation 3 for maintaining discipline, which amount has been paid to the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Hull this date. As on both occasions there was considerable provocation given by the 3rd hand, no fine or punishment is inflicted for the second assault committed on the 4th November.
